Stories I've heard of the Great Depression say that people in the country were lucky because they could have a garden. In fact they grew alot of food and canned or dried it themselves. Heard that my grandfather hated cornbread because they had to eat it so often during that time. They couldn't afford flour. They grew the corn themselves and had it ground at a local mill and that is the only bread they ever had to eat. At least they had a roof over their head which is more than alot of people had.
